California homeowners are currently facing a unique opportunity to secure energy independence through the Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP). With over $280 million authorized for the residential equity budget, this program is one of the most generous energy initiatives in the country.

What is SGIP?

The Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP) provides financial incentives for the installation of new, qualifying energy storage systems. In simple terms, it pays homeowners to install home batteries (like the Tesla Powerwall) that can store electricity for use during power outages or peak pricing hours.

Why the Focus on Battery Storage?

California's grid faces significant challenges, including wildfire risks and summer heatwaves. Batteries help stabilize the grid by storing excess solar energy during the day and releasing it at night. This reduces strain on the network and prevents blackouts.

Who Qualifies for the "Equity" Budget?

The "Equity" portion of the budget covers roughly 85% to 100% of the cost of a battery system. To qualify for this higher tier, you generally need to meet one of the following criteria:

General Market Incentives

Even if you don't qualify for the Equity budget, standard SGIP rebates are available to all customers of PG&E, SCE, SDG&E, and SoCalGas. These rebates can still cover a significant portion (20-30%) of your battery costs.

How to Apply

Applying for SGIP requires working with a certified installer, as the paperwork is complex. At CERP, we streamline this process:

  1. Check Eligibility: Use our form to see if your address qualifies for Equity or General funding.
  2. System Design: We match you with approved installers who design a system for your home.
  3. Rebate Reservation: Your installer submits the SGIP reservation request to lock in your funding.
